Objectives

ALCOS #3
Use the periodic table to identify periodic trends
  • atomic radii (size)
  • ionization energy (how much energy needed to take away an element's electron)
  • electronegativity (how easily an element CAN take away an element's electron)
  • energy levels (shells increase with each period)

Utilizing electron configurations, Lewis dot structures, and orbital notations.

Purpose of Unit
In this unit, we will learn about the periodic table. Most students feel comfortable with this traditional unit. The focus of learning is on classification used in the periodic table: metals, nonmetals, metalloids; s, p, d, & f blocks; family names; group properties & period properties. The acquisition of this knowledge allows the student to apply periodic trends to predict the behavior of the elements. Material in this unit is essential to understand subsequent topics. Lab focus is on creative ways to represent trends, including chemicool people & straw periodicity.
