Purpose of Unit
In this unit, we will learn about the subatomic particles: the proton, neutron, & electron. We will learn how atoms are put together, why they stay together, & how they behave. Students will explore the 4 phases of matter in depth, examine phase diagrams, & determine whether objects are changing in a physical way or a chemical one. The major focus in the lab for this unit is on observing chemical & physical changes. Students will observe dry ice, liquid nitrogen, and explore Non-Newtonian fluids as well as basic changes in matter. Also of major import is the hands-on work taking place in the computer lab. Students will work in groups to explore a particular contribution to the development of the atomic theory. Each group will produce a page on our wiki, collectively creating a timeline of the atomic theory.


The video clip posted below is seriously stupid. It warns you over & over again not to try this at home. I posted it because I have never seen anyone do this before & everyone always wonders what would happen if . . . The explanation is also indicates a high level of comprehension with respect to physical changes between liquid & gas! Wow.
